Custom controllers, proprietary communication protocols, and black-box firmware make it impossible to modify, repair, or truly understand the system. When something breaks, you ship it back. When you need it to do something the manufacturer didn't anticipate, you're stuck. For researchers pushing the boundaries of what's possible, closed hardware is a ceiling.

Open Source as a Research Accelerator

We've seen what happens when you open the black box. The SO-ARM101 has been modified by university labs for specific grasping tasks. The AmazingHand has been adapted for prosthetics research.
